Spartronics programmers working on robot code

Our subteams

Mechanics

The builders of the robot. Mechanics work hands-on to assemble and repair all physical components, from the chassis to each mechanism. After getting the design from the Design team, Mechanics builds the robot's mechanisms and frame. Since everything is built from scratch, this is an intensive process of machining, measuring and making sure everything fits tolerances. If you enjoy using tools, solving problems on the fly, and getting things done, this is the team for you.

Design subteam

Design

The planners and creators of the robot's blueprint. Using CAD software and creative thinking, Design turns ideas into precise 3D models that guide the build. As soon as the season's game is unveiled, Design is off to the races to design a robot that fits the goals of our strategy committee, then works with Mechanics to build the frame and mechanisms. If you enjoy engineering challenges, creativity, and attention to detail, you'll fit right in.

Electronics and Pneumatics subteam

Electronics and Pneumatics

The power and control hub. Electronics members wire the robot, manage sensors, and ensure every motor and mechanism gets the right power at the right time. You will learn how to wire machinery, build circuits and swerve drives, and implement pistons. If you're into circuits, hardware troubleshooting, or neat cable management, this is your zone.

Programming subteam

Programming

The robot's brain. Programming brings the machine to life through code, enabling autonomous movement and precise controls. Once Electronics finishes, Programming tests auto paths, controls, and mechanism code. Auto paths drive the autonomous period of a match, where robots move on their own and actions are worth more points. You will learn several programming languages and how to deploy and debug code. If you love problem-solving, logic, and turning "what if" into "watch this," this is for you.

Business and Marketing subteam

Business and Marketing

Marketing handles the team's fundraising, social media, pit design, website and YouTube, posters, merch and community outreach. You will learn business skills, video editing and filming, photography, website design and maintenance, and organization. If you are interested in business, content creation, video editing, public speaking, communication or writing, Business and Marketing is the subteam for you.

We want you to join us! Pick one of our five subteams and learn skills you can use in the real world. You will learn how to use industry-grade machines, programs, platforms and techniques, and gain business and marketing experience too. You will also gain leadership experience, lifelong friendships and the thrill of FRC competitions.

There is no requirement to have any previous experience in STEAM or robotics. We will teach you everything you need throughout the year as we build our new robot. All we ask is a can-do attitude, an open mind, and that you attend an island high school or something equivalent.

When and where we meet

  • Before Kickoff: Wednesdays, 6–8 PM. Kickoff is in early January, when the game is unveiled and build season starts.
  • After Kickoff: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 4–8 PM.
  • Where: BHS 100 Building, Room 103.

We know it can be hard to make every meeting, so there's no attendance requirement. Even coming to part of a meeting makes a big difference! Check the calendar for upcoming dates, and email spartronics4915@gmail.com with any questions.

About us

Spartronics began its first season in 2013, founded by physics teacher Enrique Chee and mentors John Sachs and Kevin Hawkins. Almost every season since, Spartronics' robots have won awards, placed highly, or won competitions outright. See every award the team has won, and meet our robots in Our History.
